Chinese Immersion School Program
We are huge believers in total immersion in China and that’s because we know it works when studying Chinese.
Our first student went to study Chinese in Chengde in May 2010 and ever since it’s been a huge success. With this, however, comes a huge cultural challenge which must not be understated when coming to study Mandarin.
Studying Chinese in a bigger city like Shanghai, Beijing of Taipei is great and you’ll learn a lot quicker than in another country without doubt. However, there are many opportunities in these cities to slip into the familiar and comfortable trap of speaking to other foreigners too much.
This is the difference between progressing, and progressing fast. If you truly want to make the most of your stay in China, immersion is necessary, as we’ve been discovering since 2010.

Living with a Chinese family
Maximise your Chinese by staying in a homestay in Taipei and Chengde.
The facilities are all of a high quality with your own bedroom, bathroom (either private or shared with the family), kitchen, living area and then WiFi, Air Conditioning and Heating.
You will have the chance to speak Chinese all day everyday and your lessons may sometimes even take place at your homestay in Chengde. In Taiwan all lessons will be at the LTL Taiwan School.
We find many of our students stay in touch with their homestay families in all of our cities which is a testament to the families, and how much students enjoyed the programs.
If you wish to be put into contact with a previous Immersion student, then let us know and we can arrange this. Your preferences are also taken into account when staying with a homestay family, Special requests like pets, vegetarian or vegan food and allergies are all issues we can resolve.
Throughout the LTL schools about 80% of students stay in Homestays and in Chengde 95% of our students live with a homestay.
Shared Apartments in Chengde
With a shared apartment your room is ideally located in the heart of Chengde. You will have access to a kitchen, living room, and WIFI with all bills included. Some apartments have a private bathroom whereas others do not. This will depend on the apartment.
You will be the only foreign resident in the apartment so use this to your advantage and start striking up some conversations with your roommates.
Shared apartments are a great choice if you are on a tighter budget. For further information on shared apartments and homestay’s just speak to us via the Live Chat at the bottom right hand side of the screen and we will find the perfect solution for you.

All homestay accommodation include meals, you can decide whether you want just Breakfast and Dinner or all meals included.
Homestays include bedroom, bathroom, WiFi and Air conditioning plus access to all other common areas such as kitchens and living areas.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I go to Chengde before Taiwan?
Generally we always recommend going to a more international city before diving straight into Chengde.
This applies even more so if you’ve never been to China before. In Chengde you will experience a huge culture shock so you should ideally be eased in.
This is what we recommend and with good reason. Chat to us if you wish to discuss this further.
What if my Chinese level is poor going to Chengde?
By coming to Taiwan first this should give you the level of Chinese you need, this is why we always say it’s best to come to Taipei first.
In Chengde there really is no other language bar Mandarin. You will pick things up quickly in Chengde but having a little knowledge before is ideal.
You’ll pick up the level of Chinese you need in Taiwan and then you can tackle Chengde head on with confidence.
What if I need help?
We have a dedicated team of staff in Chengde and although we don’t have an actual school there, we have a team of staff ready to help you.
We’ll have all contact details handed over to you so when you get to Chengde there will be people ready to welcome and support you.
Which Chinese level will I be able to achieve?
It’s almost impossible to judge given the fact every individual studies at different speeds and abilities but as a very rough guide:
Four-Five months Intensive Immersion Program – A complete beginner taking the intensive would usually reach HSK 4 (B2) level.
Seven Months-One Year Intensive Immersion Program – A complete beginner can achieve full fluency which is HSK 5 and HSK6 (C1 and C2 levels), depending on the options chosen.
Students who live with a homestay improve faster due to constant Mandarin immersion, especially with spoken Chinese.
Generally the higher the HSK grade, the harder it is to jump to the next one as you need to know double the previous amount of characters. If you want to know more, check out our HSK levels page.
Where are my Chinese lessons in Chengde?
Lessons in Chengde are based in either your homestay or a local coffee shop which are always quiet and tranquil.
This helps avoid any temptation of speaking with other foreigners.
What can I do in my spare time in Chengde?
Although Chengde is much less international that doesn’t mean there isn’t a wealth of things to do.
You will have many chances to mix with locals whether that be by yourself, through our staff or through your homestay.
You’ll have chances to visit the local parks, play some table tennis, go dancing, go hiking, enjoy the fantastic local cuisine or just enjoy some drinks in the city.
You’ll certainly not be short of things to do and if you want to meet friends, then get yourself out there and improve that Chinese even further. We can help you with this also.
